Thanksgiving, just hours before our reservation at an upscale Tribeca restaurant was to begin we got a call stating no children were allowed! Resy had accepted our reservation of adults and one baby in a high chair. What to do? Rather than disappoint all member of our party suggested HOUSEMAN’s. They said yes to all of us in an instant! The food was outrageously good, the atmosphere table to table was cheery and friendly. Recognizable dishes and new ones presented in a beautiful way. The 8 1/2 month old baby, just starting to taste solid foods, went crazy for the fava bean hummus, orange slices, mashed potatoes, and even the turkey. He was in a joyous mood throughout the meal. To be honest he’s a happy guy, but still…Friendly grandparents also enjoying the meal and drinks came over to say “hi”. A couple of fishermen recognized each other from the sea. It turns out the owner is an avid fisherman and a delightful human being. One vegan in our party was treated especially well with dishes prepared just for her…not just minus the meat. Holiday cocktails were enjoyed. The most important part of the evening was the highly professional, well organized staff, who if they were stressed didn’t show it. We’re so lucky to have learned about Houseman’s in an only in New York way, one downturn can often bring about joy. Thank you Houseman’s - from a grateful new grandmother. We’ll definitely be back & will order delivery too!

Very lovely, inviting space with great brunch options. Their free banana bread for the table is fresh and excellent! Coffee is strong, portions are generous. The tornado omelette was a special highlight.

Great little restaurant in Hudson square. Menu small and atmosphere lovely. Starter of pickles and salami was meh, but the mains of steak and the burger were great! Can tell it would be a great place to be a regular!

I’ll give this place 5 stars for the overall experience. Loved the neighborhood vibe—cozy, welcoming, and unpretentious. Service was friendly and attentive, and the space has that ideal mix of energy and calm. I had a glass of the orange wine, which was lovely. Wines by the glass are mostly in the 18–20 range—pretty standard for NYC—and the list is small but thoughtful, with some interesting, well-chosen options. Food-wise, it was more of a 4–4.5 this time around, but I know that often comes down to what you order. For starters, we had the fried cardoons and the bread with ramp butter. The bread was grilled but unfortunately too burnt, and the char ended up overpowering everything. The ramp butter was nicely salty and helped balance the flavor, but overall the dish didn’t quite land. The cardoons were fried well but lacked seasoning or flavor—menu said jalapeño and lemon, but it was just a few slices of jalapeño on the plate. The mains, though, are where this place really shines. The steak frites was spot-on: perfectly cooked steak and salty, crispy fries. The roasted chicken had beautifully crisp skin and juicy meat. The lemon aioli brought just the right brightness, and the unexpected croutons added a great crunch that tied the whole dish together. For dessert, I had the Dubai chocolate brownie. It leaned a bit dry and earthy—definitely not your rich, indulgent kind of brownie. Houseman has been on my list for a while, and I’m glad I finally made it. I’ll be back for sure—next time with different starters, and maybe another glass of that orange wine.

Came for brunch - possibly the most slept on in the city; food is incredible. We’ve been for dinner a few times and always really liked it, but the inventiveness of the brunch cooking is outstanding. Tornado egg & Chilaquiles were standouts for us. Server was a delight, coffee was great, ambience relaxed and Sunday perfection - such an easy 5*

The place is very popular with the locals. Lots of people dining in and also getting take out. We had very nice meals with good wine and also the Dubai chocolate cake was amazing. Service was good and so was the wines! It’s decently priced for NY.
